Volunteer Status Information
To be an official volunteer, an individual must fill out an
application for volunteer services, and fill out
appointment papers. In addition to these two forms the applicant
must sign a
Indemnity Release and file it with their department. Please read the
document
Volunteers and Workman's comp (PDF).
The volunteer must have appropriate safety training for their activities.
This includes completing the appropriate diving, boating, or chemical training as
stipulated for University employees.
The Human Resources Division recognizes that individuals may wish to volunteer their
services to the University, and has developed
guidelines for appointing volunteers. The University defines a volunteer
as any person who provides goods or services to the University with no monetary
or material compensation. Employees/students performing services/duties within
the scope of their regularly assigned duties/coursework are not volunteers.
The designation of volunteer is important because it defines the responsibility
of the University to the volunteer in the case of an accident. Official
volunteers' rights are covered by
FLORIDA STATUTES 110.501 – 110.504. Volunteers are covered by
Workers' Compensation and state liability protection in accordance with the definition
of a volunteer and the provisions of
Section 768.28, Florida Statutes.
