Dr. Cissna joined the Communication faculty in 1979. His research interests revolve around the theory and practice of dialogue. Dr. Cissna is a Past President of the Southern States Communication Association and serves on the editorial boards of several journals. He is currently editing The Handbook of Applied Communication
Research with Lawrence R. Frey, and recently completed guest-editing a special issue of Communication Theory on “Fresh Perspectives in Dialogue Theory” with Rob Anderson. His 1996 book with Rob Anderson, Martin Buber - Carl Rogers Dialogue: A New Transcript with Commentary, was recently translated to Japanese and published by the Tokyo publisher Shunjusha.
He has also agreed to serve as guest editor of a special issue of the Southern Communication Journal that will be devoted to “Qualitative Research in Communication."
